Moving to Luxembourg: your complete arrival checklist

Moving to Luxembourg: your complete arrival checklist

New job, internship or relocation to Luxembourg? Here are the 6 steps of your installation, in the right order — the one that avoids administrative back-and-forth.

1. Secure housing before you arrive

The Luxembourg market is tight: don't expect to find a place in three days on site. Book from abroad a home that is furnished, flexible and deposit-free — exactly what coliving offers: online booking, digital lease, room ready on day one. You can fine-tune your neighbourhood later, once you know the country.

2. Register with your commune

Within 8 days of moving in, visit your communal administration (Bierger-Center for Luxembourg City) with your passport/ID and lease. EU citizens: it's a simple declaration of arrival. Non-EU: your residence permit must be initiated before arrival.

3. Enjoy 100% free public transport

Since 2020, trains, trams and buses are free nationwide — a world first. Concretely: living in Esch-sur-Alzette or Capellen (rooms from €800-850) and working in the centre costs nothing in transport. Download the Mobilitéit app for schedules.

4. Open a bank account

Essential for your salary. Traditional banks (Spuerkeess, BIL, BGL) ask for a work contract and proof of address — your lease is enough. Neobanks work for the first weeks, but some employers require a Luxembourg IBAN.

5. SIM card and health coverage

A local SIM (Post, Orange, Tango) costs €10-20/month. Health: your CNS affiliation happens automatically through your employer; allow 2-3 weeks for the card. Meanwhile, keep your European Health Insurance Card.

6. Build your network

70% of the country's workforce is foreign: everyone has been through the "I know nobody" phase. Flatsharing accelerates everything — your housemates already know the good spots. Add expat groups and afterworks around Gare or the city centre.
