Interning in Luxembourg: where to live for a few months

Interning in Luxembourg: where to live for a few months

You have landed an internship, a VIE or a first short assignment in Luxembourg. One question remains before you pack: where will you live for those few months? Standard leases are built to last for years, landlords ask for heavy guarantees and viewing a flat from abroad is far from easy. A furnished room in a shared house solves most of these problems. Here is how to organise it, from booking to collecting your keys, with the actual rules that apply at furnished.lu.

A stay that matches your internship dates

Rooms in shared housing are let for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 1 year. Stays start on the 1st or the 15th of the month, so you can line up closely with the first day of your placement.

The most useful point for an intern: your contract ends automatically on the end date you chose. No notice letter, no paperwork. Leaving earlier is possible but it comes at a cost: a notice period of 15 days to 2 months applies, with charges. The smart move is to pick an end date that matches the end of your internship agreement at the moment you book.

What if your internship is extended? You can extend online from your tenant area, as long as nobody else has booked the room for the following period. You make an advance payment of €250, deducted from the first rent of the new period, and sign a new contract online. The rent is the one displayed when you submit the request. Tip: ask as soon as your extension is confirmed, because another tenant may book the room in the meantime.

Budget: all-inclusive rent and a light guarantee

furnished.lu offers 760 rooms with all-inclusive rent from €800 to €1,550 per month, €1,053 on average. All-inclusive means that water, electricity, heating, internet, cleaning of the shared areas, furniture and equipment are covered. There are no agency fees. For a stay of a few months this makes life simpler: you know your monthly cost to the euro, and you have no utility contracts to open and then cancel.

Booking is done online. You pay an advance payment of €250, which is an advance on your rent and is deducted from your first month. You then have 7 days to change your mind: cancellation is free and the advance payment is refunded in full.

There is also no need to tie up two months of rent. You choose your guarantee from your account, among three options:

  • SEPA mandate: free, if you have a bank account in the euro area.
  • Card authorisation via Swikly: suited to accounts outside the euro area.
  • €1,000 paid by card, held as your guarantee and refunded at the end of the lease.

Your application as an intern or VIE

The file is short. You need an identity document (plus your residence permit, if applicable) and your internship or VIE agreement. Once your file is complete, it is checked within 48 working hours. The full list is explained in our article on the documents to prepare.

A few specific cases:

  • Contract shorter than your stay (temping, fixed term): accepted if your current contract covers at least the first 3 months of the stay, or with a guarantor.
  • No contract: you can pay for the whole stay upfront.
  • Guarantor: must live in the European Union or Switzerland.

An honest piece of advice: check that the dates on your agreement match the rental period. If the agreement ends before your stay does, plan a solution from the start (a guarantor or payment in advance) rather than discovering the gap during the check.

Choosing a neighbourhood

Luxembourg is compact, so the right area mainly depends on where your company or school is located:

  • Kirchberg: home to the European institutions and many banks.
  • Gare: central, around the main railway station.
  • Bonnevoie: a residential district next to the centre.
  • Hollerich: close to the centre, and where our agency is based.
  • Cloche d'Or: a recent business district with many offices.
  • Belval / Esch-sur-Alzette: around the university campus, handy for research or academic placements.

Getting around costs nothing: public transport has been free nationwide since 2020 (buses, trams and trains in 2nd class). Details in our guide to free public transport.

Day to day, each room is for one person only. Your housemates are mostly young professionals, many of them multilingual. As the rooms are lived in, viewings are not possible: everything happens online, based on the photos in each listing.

Arrival and first formalities

On the first day of your contract, collect your keys at our agency, 149 rue de Hollerich, L-1741 Luxembourg, between 4pm and 6pm, with no appointment needed. Arriving after 6pm? Request a free key box from your tenant area.

You carry out the move-in inventory yourself, online: you have 5 days to complete it with photos. Take your time and photograph every detail, it will help at the end of your stay.

Registering with your local commune is useful. Note that registering your address is not possible for every room, notably in Esch-sur-Alzette and Capellen, and this is stated on the listings concerned. The steps are covered in our article on declaring your arrival at the commune, and the official procedures are described on guichet.lu.

Practical checklist

Before booking

  • Compare the dates on your agreement with the rental period you want.
  • Choose a start on the 1st or the 15th and an end date that matches the end of your internship.
  • Check on the listing whether address registration is possible.
  • Prepare your ID, your residence permit if needed, and your internship or VIE agreement.
  • If your agreement ends before the stay: line up a guarantor (EU or Switzerland) or pay in advance.
  • Pick your guarantee: SEPA, Swikly or €1,000 by card.

On arrival

  • Visit the Hollerich agency between 4pm and 6pm on day one, or request the key box.
  • Complete the move-in inventory online, with photos, within 5 days.
  • Register with the commune if your room allows it.
  • Use free public transport to get to your workplace.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book for just 4 months?

Yes. Any length between 2 weeks and 1 year works, starting on the 1st or the 15th of the month. The contract ends automatically on the end date you chose.

My internship has been extended by two months. What should I do?

Request the extension from your tenant area as early as possible. It is available as long as the room has not been booked for the following period, and the €250 advance payment is deducted from the first rent of the new period.

Can I view the room before booking?

No, the rooms are occupied. Everything is done online with photos, and you have 7 days after booking to cancel free of charge.
